Beyond music (gracias a la vida), Parra was part of las arpilleristas, making brightly-coloured, landscape patchwork picture crafted from wool, burlap, thread, and repurposed textile remnants. Created during Pinochet's murderous military dictatorship, these arpilleras were a form of resistance. Arpilleras were branded “tapestries of defamation” by the authoritarian regime. Arpilleras discovered by the government were confiscated and destroyed. Arpillera makers created their textile works anonymously or signed them only with their initials to avoid harassment and potential incarceration.
